IPv6 in the world : America

    OCTOBER 2005 :
  • USA : the US telecom company Global Crossing will deploy IPv6 on its whole IP network infrastructure. IPv6 is now part of Global Crossing's standard service offer. Its private network infrastructure based on MPLS should completely provide IPv6 by the end of the year.

    SEPTEMBER 2005 :

  • USA : the North American IPv6 Task Force (NAv6TF) recently organized a conference about IPv6 technology, aiming at transfering knowledge and assisting the participants at the summit with the planning and systems analysis for IPv6 deployment.

    AUGUST 2005 :

  • USA : the Office of Management and Budget announced the transition planning for IPv6 towards US federal agencies. This memorandum and its attachments provide guidance to the agencies to ensure an orderly and secure transition from IPv4 to IPv6. You can directly access the memorandum by clicking to the link below.

    JUNE 2005 :

  • USA : the federal government is hoping to shift all of its computers to run on the next-generation Internet by 2008, but so far only the Defense Department seems to be ready for the switch (courtesy from CNET).

  • USA : An e-press article (on Circle ID) tries to draw a picture about IPv6, willing to answer the myths when it comes to IPv6. The subjects related are: the needs for IPv6; the business related issues/perspectives of IPv6; the implementation of IPv6 in the USA; and more technical matters such as security.

  • USA : the Government Accountability Office (GAO) was asked to describe the key characteristics of IPv6; identify the key planning considerations for federal agencies in transitioning to IPv6; and determine the progress made by the Department of Defense (DOD) and other major agencies to transition to IPv6. The report found that, of the 22 agencies that responded, four had taken inventory of their equipment to see if it was IPv6 compliant, only one had a transition plan, and none had developed business cases or cost estimates for the shift.

    MAY 2005 :

  • USA : the Department of Commerce (DOC) Strategic Information Technology Plan (SITP) published an addendum with documents providing initial planning for the incorporation of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) into the Department's Capital Planning and Investment Control (CPIC) processes and Enterprise Architecture (EA). The Department recognizes IPv6 as an emerging standard and has already taken steps to ensure the adoption of IPv6-enabled technology as part of the lifecycle of existing investments.

    MARCH 2005 :

  • USA : in a public, online chat, Jawad Khaki, vice president of Microsoft's networking and devices division, emphasized that Longhorn (Microsoft's next-generation operating system) is being designed with a heavy dose of support for the latest wireless technologies, as well as for the new IPv6 Internet protocol.

    FEBRUARY 2005 :

  • USA : collaboration franco-américaine pour le passage à IPv6 des réseaux de défense:
Officials from the French Military Procurement Agency (DGA), the Communications-Electronics Research Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC), United States Army, IPv6 Forum, National IPv6 Task Force of France, and North American IPv6 Task Force met for two days over the last month to discuss the deployment state and technology benefits of the new Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).
Representatives from the two defense agencies agreed to jointly explore the introduction, transition, and eventual implementation of IPv6 to help support the evolution of network centric operations communication systems. The meetings were successful, and the defense agencies, IPv6 Forum, National IPv6 Task Force of France, and North American IPv6 Task Force will pursue additional collaboration efforts on IPv6.
