Point6 : IPv6 transition

Succeed your transition from IPv4 to IPv6 thanks to Point6:

Thanks to its expertise and experience, Point6 can help you migrating your network infrastructures from IPv4 to IPv6 today.

Follow the examples done by the French universities in Nantes, Strasbourg, Caen and Rennes, but also by the numerous private initiatives done in France and abroad (Japan, China, Korea, etc.) !

Why migrating your network to IPv6 ?
Why choosing to migrate to IPv6 as soon as today ?
Why taking advantage of the Point6's advantage ?
What are the Point6's experience and skills ?

Why migrating your network to IPv6 ?

Your today's investments must keep being profitable tomorrow !

  • IPv6 perpetuates your current and upcoming network development :
    • Compatibility with the new generation of internet,
    • Forecast of developments on the long term thanks to the large adressing opportunities,
  • IPv6 eases your network administration and management :
    • Suppressing the IPv6 constraints (NAT),
    • Bringing integrated security solutions (VPN),
  • IPv6 brings new features :
    • Service quality,
    • Mobility.

Why choosing to migrate to IPv6 as soon as today ?

The only reason why Point6 offers its services to industrials and public organizations as soon as today, it is just to help them solving their current network architecture problems.

Please note these few wrong statements... and what Point6 answers to them :

  • 1st wrong statement: The IPv6 technology is not ready and does not work yet, and it needs too much investment:
    • WRONG because: the IPv6 technology is ready, trustable and used (most of the desktops already own a double IPv4-IPv6 stack, the network hearts are often already equiped, etc.); in addition, several IPv6 ISP offers already exist,

  • 2nd wrong statement: The network infrastructure of my company/organization does not have anything to gain with an IPv6 transition:
    • WRONG because: today's -or tomorrow's- infrastructures can come up with an important complexity (multi-homing, multi-components, mobile elements, etc.) where IPv4 shows its limits. IPv6 can consequently match and manage more efficiently the development of your network infrastructure,

  • 3rd wrong statement: IPv6 is not a current hot topic and can be anticipated later:
    • WRONG because: by checking the IPv6 compatibility of your equipments purchases as soon as today, you will be able to plan your network management policy more easily and efficiently,

  • 4th wrong statement: The advantages for IPv6 are mainly transparent for the final users:
    • WRONG because: a transition of your services from IPv4 to IPv6 opens the door to the new generation of internet, allowing you to open your services to new users communities (asian markets, mobile users, etc.),

  • 5th wrong statement: We do not currently have the necessary resources to migrate our whole network architecture towards IPv6 :
    • WRONG because: the management of a cohabitation of equipments both in IPv4 and IPv6 are possible in order to set up a progressive transition towards IPv6..

Why taking advantage of the Point6's advantage ?

    You want :

  • To get an IPv6 tunnel (for tests purpose, transition, etc.) ?
  • To define your addressing plan ?
  • To get information about IPv6 compatibility of your equipments ?
  • To get transition solutions for your products/services ?
  • To access and organize IPv6 training sessions for your operational teams ?

Point6 brings you its support from the early steps of your action plan (defining the main stages of your transition from IPv4 to IPv6) to its deployment.

Working with the Point6 team allows you to perpetuate your investments while taking into account your existing achitecture!

The different IPv4-to-IPv6 transition operations steps adapted to an industrial type network have already been indentified by the Point6 team. The action plan can be sumed up as follow:

  • Obtaining an IPv6 connection (more information by clicking here):
Choosing between a native IPv6 connection or an IPv6 connection through a tunnel broker,
  • Addressing plan definition :
To be performed depending on the network structure,
  • Equipments update :
Costs evaluation of the migration, planning of the deployment depending on the purchases,
  • Routing configuration :
    Processing of the addressing plan,
  • Network services transition :
    Firewall, DNS,
  • Application services transition :
    Electronic mail, Web, etc.,
  • Desktops transition,
  • Metrology and control.

What are the Point6's experience and skills ?

Currently, the Point6 team takes part into the Rennes 1 University network infrastructures IPv4-to-IPv6 transition study. The Network Department of this university center has expressed the need for a larger easiness of administration, as well as for a perennity of their network infrastructures. The Department also expressed its will to take part into the national IPv6 transition project.

Point6 brings to the Rennes 1 University its expertise and savoir-faire.

The Point6 team skills lean on ENST Bretagne's (Rennes campus) as well as on IRISA's (ARMOR Project: methods, algorithms and protocols interoperability tests tools for computer networks; focusing on IPv6 since 1999).

Please note that Point6 also offers you to take advantage of its technical skills to bring you IPv6 expertise, as well as to help you to get the "IPv6 Ready" label by bringing you access to its IPv6 interoperability and accordance tests platform.
